Service Manager

Overview

Service Manager is used to install ShipCenter's Windows service, in order to use the ShipCenter Rate Quoting plugins for SalesPad Desktop. Multiple services can be installed targeting different ShipCenter databases for multi-company or Live/Test environments.

Usage

Install a Service

Click the Install Service button to start the installation wizard.

In the installation wizard, choose a startup type for the service.

  • Automatic - Service starts with Windows, immediately after installation.
  • Automatic (Delayed Start) - Service starts after Windows has finished booting, and immediately after installation.
  • Manual - Service must be started manually after installing or a system reboot.

For the Service Log On, specify the Windows user the service will run under.

  • Local System account - Installs the service on a local account. For more info on installing services on a local account, see Microsoft's documentation here.
  • This Account - Allows for naming a specific account for the service.

In the SQL Server Connection screen of the installation wizard, you can specify the ShipCenter database this instance of the service will connect to. This defaults to the current connection. When using Windows Authentication, it will be the same Windows user from the Service Log On step. This Windows user must have the appropriate SQL permissions. A SQL user can be used in place of a Windows user.

For identification purposes, it is required the service be given a unique Service ID. In the Windows service list, the service will be installed as "ShipCenter (<Service ID>)". Specify an open port for the service. This field defaults to 5501. Multiple services can be configured to use the same port, but only one can run at a time on each port.

Manage installed services

To manage a service, select its unique Service ID from the Service ID drop down.

Starting, Stopping, and Uninstalling the Service

In addition to starting and stopping the service from Windows Task Manager or services.msc, the service can be started and stopped from the Service Manager by clicking the Start or Stop buttons, respectively.

The current state  of the service is reflected by the state of the Start and Stop buttons. If the service is started or stopped from outside of ShipCenter while it is selected in the Service Manager, the Service Manager will need to be refreshed by re-selecting the service from the Service ID dropdown to update its state.

To uninstall the service, click the Uninstall Service button.
